Three separate continuities, none of which share cast or canon with each other. The Milla Jovovich saga is its own thing loosely inspired by the games; the 2021 film restarts as a straighter game adaptation; and a brand-new 2026 film restarts again with an entirely different creative team. Timely note: the newest entry, directed by Zach Cregger (Barbarian, Weapons), releases 09/18/2026 — two days after this guide's last check.

Where to start if you only have a weekend

If you want the saga, start with the 2002 original and go in order — it's the one with real continuity to follow. If you'd rather see the version closest to the games, Welcome to Raccoon City is the better entry point. The 2026 film stands entirely on its own and needs none of the above.
