WHERE TO START

One Piece: Where to Start (2026)

One Piece · Updated Sep 15, 2026
One Piece's anime is over 1,180 episodes deep and still airing, which makes "where do I start" the single most common question about it. The good news: unlike most long-runners, it has almost no filler-heavy dead zones in its first arcs, and a live-action adaptation now exists as a shorter on-ramp.

The two adaptations

  • 1.
One Piece (anime) (1999– ) — TMDB 37854 — the original, ongoing, 1,180+ episodes across arcs (East Blue, Alabasta, Skypiea, Water 7/Enies Lobby, Marineford, Dressrosa, Wano, and beyond).
  • 2.
ONE PIECE (live-action) (2023– ) — TMDB 111110 — Netflix's live-action adaptation, currently covering the East Blue arc across its first seasons; a faster, shorter way to meet the core cast before deciding whether to commit to the anime.

Where to start if you only have a weekend

Watch the live-action series (TMDB 111110) first — its first season covers the entire East Blue arc (roughly the anime's first 60 episodes) in 8 episodes, and was made with the manga creator's direct involvement.

If you get hooked (anime path)

Start the anime (TMDB 37854) from episode 1 — the East Blue arc is short by One Piece standards and is widely considered essential, not skippable. Many longtime fans do recommend watching the manga instead of the earliest, roughest-animated episodes, but for a pure watch-order guide: episode 1 onward is the standard advice, and pacing improves significantly by the Alabasta arc (~episode 60).
