Two trilogies, one straightforward question: release order or internal chronology? We recommend release order — The Lord of the Rings is the stronger trilogy and was made first, and The Hobbit films were written with the assumption you already know how the story ends.

In-universe chronological order (for a rewatch)
The Hobbit trilogy is set roughly 60 years before The Lord of the Rings, so a chronological watch runs Hobbit 1 → 2 → 3, then Fellowship → Two Towers → Return of the King.
Where to start if you only have a weekend
The original trilogy alone (Fellowship → Two Towers → Return of the King) is a complete, self-contained story and remains the more essential watch of the six films.
