Six films now that Insidious: Out of the Further (2026) has released. The tricky part is Chapter 3: it's a prequel to the first two films, made and released third — release order and story order genuinely diverge here, unlike most long-running horror franchises.

Chronological (in-story) order
Chapter 3 → Insidious → Chapter 2 → The Last Key → The Red Door → Out of the Further. Chapter 3 and The Last Key both center on psychic Elise Rainier before/around the Lambert family's haunting; The Red Door and Out of the Further follow the Lambert family's next generation years later.
Where to start if you only have a weekend
Release order is the better first pass — Chapter 2 is a direct continuation of the original's cliffhanger, and watching Chapter 3 third (as intended) lands better once you already know who Elise Rainier is and what happens to her.
