63 years of television, one time-traveling lead who periodically becomes a different actor, and three separate TMDB entries because the show itself has relaunched twice. You do not need to watch from 1963 to understand what's happening today — the show is deliberately structured so each new Doctor is a soft entry point.
The three eras

Doctor Who (Classic) (1963–1989) — TMDB 121 — black-and-white and early-color serials, seven Doctors, low budget, huge influence. For completists and classic-sci-fi fans only.
2.
Doctor Who (2005 revival) (2005–2022) — TMDB 57243 — the modern relaunch that made the show a global hit again; Doctors Nine through Thirteen (Eccleston, Tennant, Smith, Capaldi, Whittaker).
3.
Doctor Who (2024 relaunch) — TMDB 239770 — the current Disney+ co-production era, restarting numbering with the Fifteenth Doctor (Ncuti Gatwa) and designed as a jumping-on point for viewers with zero prior knowledge.
Where to start if you only have a weekend
Start at the 2024 relaunch (TMDB 239770) — it was explicitly built as a no-homework entry point. If you want the show that made Doctor Who a modern phenomenon first, start the 2005 revival (TMDB 57243) at its Season 1, Episode 1 ("Rose") instead; it only assumes you know the Doctor travels in a police-box-shaped ship and doesn't like violence.
If you get hooked
The classic series (TMDB 121) rewards going back once you know the modern show's shorthand — "Genesis of the Daleks" and "The Talons of Weng-Chiang" are usually the recommended starting serials rather than the 1963 pilot.
