Name the actual want, not the genre label
"I want a comedy" is usually shorthand for something more specific — low commitment, nothing that requires full attention, something to talk over. "I want a thriller" might really mean "I want to be gripped, I don't care what genre does it." Get Out is technically horror but plays like a tightly wound thriller with sharp comedy in it — a genre-label standoff often dissolves once both people say what they actually want from the next two hours instead of which shelf the title sits on.
Alternate who "wins" the pick, visibly
If the same person's genre preference wins most nights, the other person stops proposing anything, which looks like agreement but isn't. Keeping an explicit, visible turn order — even an informal one — means a genre disagreement isn't relitigated from scratch every time; it's already been decided whose turn it is.
Look for the overlap before picking a side
Some titles genuinely split the difference. Knives Out is a comedy for someone who wants to laugh and a real mystery for someone who wants to be gripped — it's not a compromise so much as a title that satisfies both asks at once. Before treating a genre disagreement as binary, it's worth a minute checking whether something on the watchlist already threads that needle.
Split it across two nights instead of merging it into one
Not every disagreement needs a single winning pick. Better Call Saul for the person who wants a slow-burn drama one night, something lighter the next — alternating nights avoids both the standoff and the compromise nobody's happy with. A household that tracks what it watched together can see, over a month, whether one person's genre is quietly winning every time; that visibility is most of the fix.
