Automatic vs. Manual Watch Tracking: Which Should You Use?
Updated Sep 16, 2026
Every watch-tracking app picks one of two starting points: you tell it what you watched, or it figures that out from somewhere else. Neither is strictly better — they trade off effort against accuracy, and most people end up mixing both.
Manual tracking
You mark a title as watched yourself, usually right after finishing it (or catching up on a backlog).
Pros: works with any source — a friend's TV, a plane, a theater, a service the app has never heard of. Nothing to connect, nothing that can misfire. You control exactly what's on the record, including rewatches and things you don't want auto-logged.
Cons: it only works if you remember to do it. Miss a few nights and your history has gaps; forget an entire show and there's no way for the app to know it happened.
Automatic tracking
The app logs a watch for you, usually by connecting to a media server (Plex, Jellyfin), a scrobbling plugin (Kodi), or reading your streaming activity where the platform allows it.
Pros: nothing to remember. Your history builds itself in the background, which is the only way it stays complete over months and years rather than just the week you were paying attention.
Cons: it only covers what it's connected to. A show watched on a friend's account, at someone else's house, or on a service without an integration doesn't get logged unless you also do it by hand. Automation can also over-log — a scrobbler that fires on a rewatch you didn't actually finish, or double-counts an episode replayed from the start.
Import: the third option nobody markets as its own category
Neither of the above helps with history you already have somewhere else. A one-time import — exporting your list from a previous tracker and bringing it into a new one — isn't automatic tracking (nothing keeps syncing after) and isn't manual entry one title at a time either. It's how you move platforms without starting your history over from zero, and it's the first thing worth doing before you commit to either ongoing method above. CouchReel's switching guides cover the export/import steps for the most common trackers people move from.
Which one should you use
Most people end up doing both: automatic tracking for whatever's connected (a media server, a supported streaming source), manual entry for everything that falls outside it — a movie at a theater, something watched on a friend's account, a rewatch you want logged on a specific date. The apps that only offer one or the other push you toward gaps (automatic-only) or busywork (manual-only). The ones worth using let you do either, per title, without picking a lane up front.
